Something about waving a magnet around the HDD's doesn't sound right.

A magnet of that size does no harm to the hard drive.

That wonderful Dutch accent :P

the hard drive has a much larger magnet inside it. And in the video the magnet is weak and the hard drive several inches away.

I couldn't understand the name of the switch. Was it a read or reed switch?

@Derek:

It's a reed switch as it uses small metal reeds that are pulled together in a magnetic field.

It's not true that a magnetic field won't penetrate metal. There is no material known that will stop a magnetic field.

Other then that the video is a great idea.

Does anyone have anymore info on this reed switch, All I can find is the big ones that are used for alarms.

Actually, on the Discovery Channel the other day, they tested magnets on a portable computer and only an electro-magnet (one of the ones used in junkyards) damaged the HHD. It's very well protected. It took 20 seconds to become damaged.

To clear it up. What was trying to be said it a magnet (unless strong enough to pick up a couple tons, as stated above) can harm you HHD because of the magnetic field inside. That is just a paranoid rumor that has been spread.

typo *HDD*

What if they simply reconnect the cut wires?

Seems neat though for protecting against someone who doesn't know about it.
